Medion MD8083 fan site
This (unofficial) website contains details about the Medion MD8083 computer, which went on sale at Aldi stores across the UK on April 1st 2004. Please see the main page first if you are new to this site.
Is the Advent T9 a re-badged MD8083?
The machine's styling is slightly different, with a different case - it's silver all over instead of having black panels for the DVD drives, front flap, and surround around the power button. The front power button is also a different design, although interestingly it's the same design as a previous Medion machine.
It'd appear from people who have taken a look at the machine in PC World stores, that it's also got an identical layout on the back of the machine, including the scart socket, and is fitted with the ATI Radeon 9800XXL, which was made for the MD8083 and hadn't been used in a production machine previously.
Obviously without actually having the machine and being able to spend time running my usual diagnostics programs on it, I can't confirm that it's exactly the same - internal components may differ, upgradability might not be the same, and how good the "Advent T9" is compared with the Medion MD8083 is anyone's guess... It may actually be a Medion by just with the Advent name, although PC World's sold Medion machines before so I can't see why they'd also want to rename this one also, unless they've found Advent branded machines sell better possibly.
PC World have sold "Advent" machines before, but it was always my impression that they are a totally different company from Medion, so it'll be interesting to try and find out what the link-up is between the two companies, and if Advent have simply re-badged the machine and used a different design. The mouse, keyboard and TV remote are exactly the same as supplied with the MD8083, although use a different colour plastic.
This could be an ideal opportunity for anyone who missed out on the MD8083 at Aldi to pick up a similar spec machine - it also seems cheaper (for the base unit alone) although it is 3 months after it went on sale at Aldi so MD8083 owners shouldn't feel disheartened by the lower price. It'd also appear it's only got a 1 year warranty as opposed to the amazing 3 year on-site that Aldi's machine came with, and it's not clear at all what the software bundle is.
If you've got an "Advent T9" and can provide further details of the specifications of the machine, please let us know on the forum.
Advent T9's available on the PC World website...
It'd be worth noting that they list the 15" TFT monitor as being a Medion one!
Mysteriously the "ADVENT T9 base unit + 17" TFT and package" option lists the machine as being "35Ghz", although clarifies it as having a 3000 mhz Processor speed.
